The evaluation of material base standard of ODS ferritic stainless steel core component for fast breeder reactors

ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) ferritic-martainsitic steels are one of the most prospective cladding materials for advanced fast breeder reactors, since they are expected to have excellent swelling resistance and superior high temperature strength due to the finely distributed stable oxide particles(Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$). Properties and the tentative strength equations for ODS ferritic-martainsitic were proposed on the basis of the latest data to apply to the feasibility study of the sodium coolant MOX fuel plant. The items of equations are follows. (1)creep rupture strength (2)correction factor of creep rupture strength (in Na and in reactor) (3)outer surface eorrosion (Na) (4)inner surface corrosion (in MOX fuel pin) (5)thermal conductivity

The second Power-To-Melt (PTM) test, PTM-2, was performed in the experimental fast reactor "JOYO". AIl of the twenty-four fuel pins of the irradiation vehicle, B5D-2, for the PTM-2 test, were provided for post-irradiation-experiment (PIE) to evaluate the PTM values. ln this study, the PIE technique for PTM test was established and the PTM results were evaluated. The findings are as follows: (1) The maximum fuel-melting ratio on the transverse section was 10.7%, and was within the limit of fuel-melting in this PTM test enough. Unexpected fuel-melting amount to a ratio of 11.8% was found at $$sim$$24 mm below the peak power elevation in a test fuel pin, lt is possible that this arose from secondary fuel-melting. (2) Combination of metallographical observation with X-ray microanalysis of plutonium distribution was very effective for the identification of once-molten fuel zone. (3) The PTM evaluation suggested that dependence of the PTM on the fuel pellet density was stronger than that of previous foreign PTM tests, while the dependence on the pellet-cladding gap and the oxygen-to-metal ratio was indistinctly. The dependence on the cladding temperature and the fill gas composition was not shown as well.

Fabrication and evaluation of the tubed functionally gradient material by slurry dipping

This report is the PNC contract research for fiscal year of 1993 titled "Formation of Ti/SUS/Mo graded layer by slurry dipping." Fuel sheath material for FBR is used under a severe enviroment. The life of conventionally used SUS316 is known to be only two years. The development of long-life core material having high temperature strength, radiation resistance and anti-corrosion property is now essential. To create a super-long-life core materials for FBR it seems promising to employ the concept of functionally gradient material, in which these different materials are configurated with grading : as base material is used SUS316 stainless steel, the inner wall is made of Ti for the radiation resistant and anti-corrosion property with graded intermediate layers towards the base metal and the outer shell is the graded Mo layer for the corrosion resistance against liquid sodium. The shape of the core tube is a long cylindrical tube and its dimensions are 8.5mm in outer diameter, about 2m in length, shell thickness is 0.5mm and the thickness of the gradient layer is about 0.1mm. However, we have not yet acquired sufficient techniques to realize such shape and dimmensions, and the investigation is planned to get basic informations on the processing of the core materials with graded structures. Slurry dipping has been employed for forming a graded layer on curved inner and outer surfaces. And it is indispensable that the graded layers have showed sufficient thermal-stress relief function, as well as good bonding capability. In this year (FY 1993), the formation of the graded inner layer of Ti/SUS316 by slurry dipping was investigated. The formation procedure is briefly mentioned here as follows. Cylindrical green compacts of SUS304 stainless steel powder was prepared by die compaction and CIP as a substrate for slurry dipping. Development of the ultrasonic testing equipment for FBR; Results of R&D

This report decribes the development of multi-array type probe for FBR steamgenerator tube. We studied integration between three kinds of probes, which were for axial flaw, for circumferential flaw and for wall thickness flaw, detecting method of accuracy locating probe and basic composition of multi-channel detector. It was comfirmed that each devices had object performance in performance test. We shall use this results to study design and manufacture of ultrasonic testing equipment for steamgenerator of FBR Monju.

Corrosion tests of cladding inner surface coating

The present report describes the results of studies performed sa a part of the results of "CORROSION TESTS OF CLADDING INNER SURFACE COATING" during a period of Feb. 20 - Mar.30, 1990. In the present study, corrosion tests have been carried out with CsOH to evaluate corrosion resistance of ferritic stainless steel and coated stainless steel. The following results were drawn from the present study (1)Corrosion tests of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel with ScOH were made at temperatures of 500-700$$^{circ}$$C. After corrosin tests, intergranular attack was found to occur in the austenitic steel, however, there was no intergranular attack in the ferritic steel. Ferritic steel appears to have corrosion resistance to liquid CsOH superior to austenitic steel. (2)Corrosion tests between Ni-Ti, Ti, Al coatings on stainless steel and CsOH were made at temperature of 500-700$$^{circ}$$C. Ni-Ti and Al coated stainless steel showed no intergranular attack, though the coatings were locally detached from the stainless stell substrates. Intergranular attack was observed in the Ti coated stainless steel. Ni-Ti and Al coating seem to be useful for reduction of intergranular attack of stainless steel cladding.
